What to Do When Your Wife Doesn’t Want Sex Anymore
Your wife can love you and still not want to have sex with you. That sentence stings, but it’s one of the most useful truths in any long relationship. Love and desire are not the same thing. Plenty of men spend years assuming that if the love is there, the sex will follow. When it doesn’t, the quiet in the bedroom starts to feel like a verdict.
So what’s missing? Often it’s being liked. Raymond Carver’s short poem “Late Fragment” closes on the wish to feel beloved, and that word holds the key. Being beloved means your partner enjoys who you are. Love can survive resentment and distance. Liking is what makes her want to sit close on the couch, run her fingers through your hair, and reach for you at night. If you want to know how to get your wife to desire you again, start by asking whether she still enjoys you.
The fastest way back to being liked is curiosity. Curiosity in relationships doesn’t mean interrogating her about where she’s been. It means noticing her. The new haircut. Why she dressed up today. What she thought about the article you both read. Long term couples get complacent and assume they already know each other completely. Curiosity keeps her new to you, and it tells her she’s chosen.
When resentment has built up, rebuilding intimacy takes patience. Pain settles in layers, and clearing it can take months of steady effort on the emotional connection in your marriage before the physical connection returns. Eventually it comes down to one honest question for both of you. Are you willing to repair? Not “will you fix this today,” but is your will on board at all. You don’t need to know how yet. You decide together, then find the way.
It also helps to understand core wounds in relationships. Most of us carry an old message about ourselves into adulthood, like not good enough, too much, or easy to leave. In conflict, that wound hides under anger and frustration. When you learn what hers is and send her the opposite message every day, her guard softens. Something as simple as “you will always be forgiven by me” can lower the temperature in the room.
Watch what you’re fighting about, too. Couples fighting about hypotheticals and talking in circles burn energy on problems that don’t exist. Instead, build a shared identity in your marriage through experiences, not more conversation. Walks. Dinners out. A concert you both love. You don’t need to be carbon copies. You need a thing that’s yours.
Love keeps you together. Feeling liked by your partner is what brings desire back. Get curious, find the wound, and choose repair together.
